Great Lakes Christian Homes Stories
From Founding Leader to Chaplain at Great Lakes Christian Homes
In 2019, Great Lakes Christian Homes (GLCH) welcomed back a familiar face, marking a poignant return for its very first employee—Dan Johnson, originally hired in the 1980s. At that time, GLCH was just an ambitious vision: a retirement community grounded in safety, fellowship, and spiritual care. As the first Executive Director, Dan helped introduce the vision to area churches, raise the necessary support, and lay the foundation for what GLCH would become.
In 1987, following a partnership with sister organization Golden Years, Dan returned to pastoral ministry. More than three decades later, the call came once again—this time to serve as Chaplain following the retirement of George Stehle.
Throughout its history, Great Lakes Christian Homes has remained committed to its Christian faith traditions, ensuring that spiritual care is integral to community life. The presence of a Chaplain reflects this commitment: providing residents with guidance, prayer, chapel services, pastoral care, and spiritual companionship. At GLCH, faith is seen as essential to holistic well-being, nurturing the spirit alongside mind and body.
Personal life experiences—including the loss of a spouse after nearly 47 years of marriage—have provided Dan with deep empathy for the grief and transitions many residents face. This understanding enriches Dan’s ministry, offering comfort and walking alongside residents as they navigate their own journeys.
Great Lakes Christian Homes has also been a place of new beginnings, where Dan found love again when he met and married Stephanie—a blessing to both. Together, they encourage residents, lead worship, and help cultivate the spiritual and social life that makes GLCH such a special community.
Looking back, it is remarkable to see how the seeds planted decades ago continue to bear fruit today—not only in the vibrant life of the community but in the ongoing privilege of serving God by serving His people. Truly, this is a full circle of faith.
