Annual Midwinter Lecture Series 2010 Wednesdays, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Greencroft Goshen Senior Center 1820 Greencroft Blvd., Goshen (574) 537-4090 The Lifelong Learning Institute of Elkhart County invites the public to its annual Midwinter Lecture Series. The free lectures, on Wednesdays at the Greencroft Goshen Senior Center, begin at 1:30 p.m. and run for one hour, including time for questions and answers. No registration is required. January 20: Jan Gleysteen - Five Years Till Daybreak. An account of the rise of fascism and National Socialism during the 1930s, the five years of Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, the liberation and postwar reconstruction, as seen from the perspective of one Christian pacifist Mennonite family. January 27: Vera Hochstetler - From England to Amish. A most unusual story of a life beginning as a Catholic in England, operating the Club 33 tavern in Goshen and marrying an Amishman. Along the way she worked for a Jewish family, served in the British army, had three children, provided a voice for Amish women and volunteered at The Window. February 3: Rev. Daniel Marshall - Roads to Goshen. WWII displaced millions in Eastern Europe. This is the story of Goshen's Holy Virgin Protection Russian Orthodox Church, the individuals who founded the parish on County Rd. 21 and the citizens of Goshen who helped make this their new home. Fr. Daniel is the current rector of the parish. February 10: John D. Yordy - Living and Learning: The Ongoing Journey. Beginning in the farmlands of Michigan, and working in the U.S., Latin America, Africa and at Goshen College, this is one person's story of the people, events and choices that continue to shape his life. February 17: Charles Hostetler - Nuclear Waste at Hanford. In 1943, Hanford was created to produce nuclear material for the war effort. But in the mid 80s, the mission changed to environmental cleanup. Charles will relate his own involvement in the transition, focusing on the interactions among the technical community, government decision makers and the public. February 24: Marie Stoltzfus - My Life Is a Tapestry. Her tapestry presents a deeply influential background with significant decisions, events and geographical locations displaying a colorful design of a meaningful life. __________ Special announcement: LLI is offering an earlier-than-usual course this spring. The tentative title is Music in Performance. Taught by Mary Oyer, it will feature music to be performed by the Julliard String Quartet in the Performing Arts Series at Goshen College on Feb. 19. Course dates are Feb. 8, 11, 15, & 18 from 2:00-3:30 in Music Center 153. The course will also include studies in the music of an organ recital to be performed near those dates.
