Greencroft Middlebury on Quilt Gardens Tour

Greencroft Middlebury is one of the sites in the Elkhart County Convention & Visitors Bureau's 2009 Quilt Gardens Tour. The Greencroft Middlebury quilt garden features the “Barn Raising” pattern and contains over 3,500 white and scarlet begonias in a 24 by 36 foot bed. Greencroft residents, staff and volunteers helped plan, plant and maintain the garden.

The Barn Raising pattern brings to mind rural life, cooperative effort, and community support and relates to the Amish life prevalent in and around Middlebury.

The tour, which opened May 25, features 16 large-scale quilt-patterned gardens and 12 oversize quilt art murals in seven communities throughout the area. It includes all the garden sites on the 2008 tour plus four new ones and two new murals. Some 80,000 annuals are planted in the 2009 gardens.

In 2008, its first year, the tour attracted national recognition. The Sunrise pattern quilt garden at the Old Bag Factory in Goshen was named a finalist in the Chicago Tribune's 2008 "Glorious Gardens Contest" and the American Bus Association listed the tour as one of the Top 100 Events in North America for 2009.
